American Studies Colloquium (Conference/Workshop/Seminar)
Rachel Nolan (English) will give a talk entitled "Production, Reproduction, and Provisional Reading in Progressive-Era Women's Narratives: 'A cool and deliberate sort of madness,'" which considers the story of Sara Koten, a Jewish immigrant woman who murdered her employer after her accusation that he sexually assaulted her was dismissed by the courts. Koten's story proliferated--through sensational newspaper stories, through court filings, and through a realist play. Nolan's talk will consider how contemporary scholars should consider and understand this proliferation of competing accounts.
